Fabrication

ASU-PRL supports custom PV prototyping, assembly, and encapsulation. Equipment includes:

  • Interconnection: An automated stringer and tabber machine for precise, repeatable soldering and interconnection of solar cells into strings.
  • Lamination: A commercial-grade laminator capable of producing complete, custom photovoltaic modules up to 3' x 4' in size.
  • Variable Isolation Testing: In-house fabrication is central to comparative studies, allowing researchers to build custom test modules and isolate specific manufacturing variables.
  • Controlled Baseline Studies: Recent durability studies utilized the lab to fabricate test modules to directly compare the reliability of Glass/Glass (GG), Glass/Polymer Backsheet (GB), and Glass/Transparent Backsheet (GT) architectures.
